Basketball Recap: Hillside Comes Up Short

Hillside lost against Southern School of Energy and Sustainability back in December of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Monday. The Hillside Hornets were dealt a 54-27 loss at the hands of the Southern School of Energy and Sustainability Spartans. While losing is never fun, the Hornets can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 403rd, while the Spartans are ranked 133rd).

Despite the loss, Hillside still got an impressive performance from Mckenzy Green, who posted five points and five rebounds. Green is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last three games she's played. Jayla Smith was another key player, putting up four points.

Even though they lost, Hillside smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 14 offensive boards in three consecutive matches.

Southern School of Energy and Sustainability got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Ashlyn Hudson out in front who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 18 boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Aliyah Herndon, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 18 boards.

Hillside's defeat dropped their record down to 2-8. As for Southern School of Energy and Sustainability, their record is now 7-2.

The future could be bright for both Hillside and Southern School of Energy and Sustainability: their next opponents haven't had the best luck recently. Hillside will try to hand Riverside-Durham their third-straight loss when the two meet at 6:30 p.m. on January 10th. Similarly, Southern School of Energy and Sustainability will try to hand Durham School of the Arts their fifth-straight defeat when the two meet at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
