Basketball Recap: Newman Grove/St. Edward Comes Up Short

Newman Grove/St. Edward was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They received a blow as they fell 40-24 to the Winside Wildcats.

Despite the loss, Newman Grove/St. Edward still got an impressive performance from Kailey Patzel, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 16 boards. Patzel is crushing it when it comes to rebounds: she's pulled down at least nine every time she's taken the court this season.

Even though they lost, Newman Grove/St. Edward smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive boards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Winside only pulled down nine offensive rebounds.

Winside found their leader in sophomore Hadleigh Schutt, who posted 23 points along with seven rebounds and six steals. That makes it three consecutive games in which Schutt has scored at least a third of Winside's points. Ellie Topp was another key player, dropping a double-double on 13 points and ten boards.

Newman Grove/St. Edward's loss dropped their record down to 0-4. As for Winside, their win ended a 12-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 1-2.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. A feisty cat fight will be fought when the Newman Grove/St. Edward Panthers take on the Palmer Tigers at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Winside and Tri County Northeast will compete for holiday cheer at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
