Basketball Recap: Humboldt Takes a Loss

After flying high against Jayhawk Linn last Thursday, Humboldt came back down to earth. The Humboldt Cubs took a 64-55 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Caney Valley Bullpups on Friday. The Cubs were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Bullpups apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in February of 2024.

Despite the loss, Humboldt still got an impressive performance from Colden Cook, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and 12 rebounds. Cook's evening made it seven games in a row in which he has scored at least 15 points. Another player making a difference was Tre Franklin, who posted 13 points.

Humboldt's defeat was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 5-1 and their overall record down to 13-3. As for Caney Valley, the win was the ninth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 9-2.

Looking ahead, Humboldt will take on Neodesha on Tuesday. Humboldt is on a four-game streak of home wins, Neodesha a five-game streak of away wins -- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court. As for Caney Valley, they will face off against Cherryvale on Tuesday. One thing working in Caney Valley's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last ten games.
