Basketball Recap: Zaria Vann's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Monacan over Manchester

After flying high against Richmond City School of the Arts last Friday, Monacan came back down to earth. The Monacan Chiefs took a 65-54 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Manchester Lancers on Monday. The Chiefs have struggled against the Lancers recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive lost matchup.

Monacan's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Zaria Vann, who posted 12 points and five rebounds. The dominant performance also gave Vann a new career-high in shooting accuracy (80%). Another player making a difference was Trinity Jones, who put up 13 points and six boards.

Even though they lost, Monacan smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive boards in 12 consecutive matches.

Rayne Wright continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Manchester, going 9-for-22 on her way to 31 points in addition to seven rebounds and five steals. Wright's evening made it six games in a row in which she has scored at least 16 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Madison Smith, who earned eight points and seven boards.

Monacan's defeat dropped their record down to 15-5. As for Manchester, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 11 of their last 12 games, which provided a nice bump to their 16-3 record this season.

Monacan wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 2-0 win against Huguenot on the 11th. Manchester has also already played their next match (against Cosby), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
