Westside entered their tilt with Laurens on Friday with five consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with six. It was close, but they capped 2024 with a 54-52 victory over the Laurens Raiders. The win was all the more spectacular given the Wolverines' disadvantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 255th in Florida, while the Raiders are ranked 31st in South Carolina).

Westside's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jaylen Mitchell, who posted 12 points. Daquan McKever was another key player, putting up nine points.

Laurens' loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Q Quinton Watts, who went 6 of 14 on his way to 17 points and four steals, and DJ Dondrevious Martin, who put up 13 points and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Z Zakarion Simpson, who had four points and five rebounds.

Westside's win bumped their record up to 8-6. As for Laurens, they moved to 6-4 with that defeat, which also ended their five-game winning streak.

Westside didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 57-49 victory against San Jose Prep on the 28th. As for Laurens, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next matchup, a 57-40 win against Blue Ridge on the 28th.
