Softball Game Preview: Herrin Tigers vs. Murphysboro Red Devils

Herrin hasn't had much luck against Murphysboro recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The Tigers will head out to challenge the Red Devils at 4:30 p.m. Herrin has given up an average of 10.8 runs per game this season, but Monday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Friday just wasn't the day for Herrin's offense. They came up short against Carterville on Friday, falling 12-0.

Meanwhile, Murphysboro was not the first on the board on Friday, but they got there more often. They had just enough and edged out Massac County 6-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Red Devils have posted against the Patriots since April 4, 2022.

Arianna Smith was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and one unearned) runs off ten hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 12 consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run. That's the most hits she has posted since back in May of 2025.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Macey Alexander, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. Landrie Green also deserves some recognition as she scored her first run of the season.

Murphysboro kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They are 4-1 when they post 11 or more hits.

Murphysboro's record is now 8-11. As for Herrin, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-17.

Herrin couldn't quite finish off Murphysboro in their previous meeting two weeks ago and fell 7-5. Can the Tigers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
