The Parma Panthers will take on the Melba Mustangs at 5:15 p.m. on Thursday. Parma is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.9 runs per game this season.
Parma is probably headed into the contest with a chip on their shoulder considering Nampa Christian just ended the team's 15-game winning streak on Thursday. They fell 9-5 to the Trojans.
Wesli Crockett spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and seven unearned) runs on eight hits.
At the plate, Lakota Leppert was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played. Another player making a difference was Kinlea Cole, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one double.
Meanwhile, Melba had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8.5 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Saturday. They walked away with a 17-14 win over the Bulldogs.
Kodi Adams and Analyse Durham did most of the damage at the plate: Adams went 2-for-5 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI, while Durham went 4-for-5 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. That's the most runs Adams has posted since back in April. Jessie Rea was another key player, going 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs.
Melba kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. They are 5-1 when they post 11 or more hits.
Melba's victory bumped their record up to 10-13. As for Parma, their defeat was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 11-1 and their overall record down to 22-3.
Melba's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Parma has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10 hits per game. It's a different story for Melba, though, as they've been averaging 9.5 hits. Given Parma's sizable advantage in that area, the Mustangs will need to find a way to close that gap.
Parma took their win against Melba when the teams last played last Tuesday by a conclusive 17-7 score. Do the Panthers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Mustangs turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
