Baseball Recap: Orcutt Academy's Win Ends Five-Game Losing Streak on the Road

Orcutt Academy proved they can win big last Monday (they won by six) and on Tuesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Coast Union Broncos 5-3. This was a revenge game for the Spartans: when they faced off against the Broncos back in March, they had to take a 9-7 loss.

Nick Grindy made a splash no matter where he played. He struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off six hits (and not a single walk). He has become a key player for Orcutt Academy: the team is 3-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 2-9 otherwise. Grindy was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one double. That double was his first of the season.

Grindy wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Josue Ramirez, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one stolen base. Daniel Meraz also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.

Orcutt Academy's victory ended a five-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 5-10. As for Coast Union, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-4 record this season.

Orcutt Academy will venture away from home to challenge Santa Maria at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Spartans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Saints have averaged an impressive 6.8 runs per game this season. As for Coast Union, they will be playing at home against San Luis Obispo Classical Academy at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. The Broncos are facing the Grizzlies at the right time seeing as the Grizzlies are stuck on a three-game losing streak.
