Basketball Recap: Fleming comes up short despite David Betley's strong performance

Basketball Recap: Fleming Wildcats vs. Genoa-Hugo/Karval Pirates

The Fleming Wildcats struggled with threes on Saturday (the Genoa-Hugo/Karval Pirates had six more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Fleming took a 50-44 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Pirates. Fleming has struggled against the Pirates recently, as their matchup on Saturday was their third consecutive lost matchup.

When it comes to explaining why Fleming lost, one person who can't be blamed is David Betley. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double on 19 points and 11 rebounds. Another player making a difference was Travis Johnson, who scored 12 points along with five rebounds and four steals.

Genoa-Hugo/Karval had a senior duo take command as Dane Lockhart scored 20 points along with three steals and Trey Smith scored 18 points along with five rebounds and two steals. It was the first time this season that Lockhart scored 15 or more points.

Fleming has not been sharp recently as the team's lost eight of their last nine contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-11 record this season. As for Genoa-Hugo/Karval, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 7-8 record this season.

Fleming will play host again and welcome the Cardinals, where tip off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Genoa-Hugo/Karval is on the road again on Friday and plays the Eagles at 4:00 p.m. on February 9th.
