Baseball Recap: Dayton Has No Trouble Against Newport

Dayton's game on Thursday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Saturday. They put the hurt on the Newport Wildcats with a sharp 14-2 win. The victory continues a trend for the Greendevils in their matchups with the Wildcats: they've now won eight in a row.

Elias Lopez made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out 12 over five innings pitched. Those 12 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Chad Nickell, who went 1-for-2 with three stolen bases, three runs, and one double. Those three stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Anthony Massey was another key player, going 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and two runs.

Dayton was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .520. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

Dayton's win bumped their record up to 4-21. As for Newport, they are on a 62-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-37.

Looking ahead, Dayton will look to defend their home field on Saturday against Elliott County at 1:30 p.m. Newport does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
