Softball Game Preview: Herrin Tigers vs. Mt. Vernon Rams

The Herrin Tigers are taking a road trip to square off against the Mt. Vernon Rams at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this match.

Last Friday, Herrin didn't have quite enough to beat Chester and fell 6-5. The Tigers have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Meanwhile, Mt. Vernon came up short against Zeigler-Royalton on Monday and fell 7-4. The Rams have struggled against the Tornadoes recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost meeting.

Taylor DeSmith spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and three unearned) runs on 11 hits and racked up 12 Ks. That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in March of 2024.

On the hitting side, Arwin Wilkey was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 3-for-4. Another player making a difference was Danicah Tobin, who scored a run while going 1-for-4.

Mt. Vernon's loss dropped their record down to 1-1. As for Herrin, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-2.

Herrin couldn't quite get it done against Mt. Vernon when the teams last played back in May of 2024 as they fell 8-3. Can Herrin avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
