Baseball Recap: Crete Wins Going Away Against Aurora

Crete had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the ten-run drubbing they dealt Aurora on Friday. The Cardinals were the clear victors by a 14-4 margin over the Huskies. The Cardinals might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine games by seven runs or more this season.

Brooks Piening made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Crete is undefeated when Piening posts two or more runs, but 7-11 otherwise.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Patton Svitak, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, four RBI, and one stolen base. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high. Nick Wendt was another key player, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.

Crete always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .550. They are a perfect 7-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Crete pushed their record up to 15-11 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.3 runs over those games. As for Aurora, they have been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last eight matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-13 record this season.

Crete will challenge North Platte at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Aurora does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
