Weekend's wildest high school football games

A pair of Illinois teams combined for 141 points and over 1,600 yards of offense in an Class 3A playoff game to highlight this weekend's wildest games.


Greenville (Ill.) 71
Mt. Carmel (Ill.) 70
Greenville overcame a 70-49 deficit in the fourth quarter to edge Mt. Carmel by one point in the Class 3A state playoffs. Greenville scored all three touchdowns in the final two minutes and 13 seconds, according to the Courier Press. Following Eric Turok's 1-yard touchdown run with 20 seconds remaining, Tyler Hutchinson threw to Austin Lawrence for the game-winning two-point conversion. Various reports have Hutchinson completing 43 of either 82 or 87 passes for 644 yards. If Hutchinson had 87 attempts, that would be a national record. The current national record is 83, according to the National Federation of High Schools. Mount Carmel quarterback Reece Metcalf completed 22 of 36 passes for 516 yards and seven touchdowns. The two teams combined for 1,629 yards of offense including 873 by Greenville and 756 by Mt. Carmel.

Manteca (Calif.) 69
Central Valley (Calif.) 55
Three players had over 200 yards rushing in the game, including Central Valley's Ja'Quan Gardner, who rushed for 373 yards and four touchdowns. Also, Kendel Johnson ran for 214 yards for C.V. For Manteca, Alex Laurel ran for 256 yards and five touchdowns.

Sachse (Texas) 63
Mesquite (Texas) 56
After watching a 22-point lead disappear in the final four minutes of the game, Sachse escaped with a win by scoring a 15-yard touchdown by Devine Ozigbo with 27 seconds remaining. Sachse quarterback Kent Myers threw for 274 yards and five touchdowns while Ozigbo ran for 183 yards and three scores. Mesquite had two quarterbacks throw for over 200 yards with Colby Callaway throwing for 218 yards and four touchdowns and Trey LeBlanc throwing for 205 yards and three scores. Octayvius Miles caught 10 passes for 216 yards and three scores.



Saddle Brook (N.J.) 76
Wallington (N.J.) 56
Chris Jacobson led his team to the win by rushing for 369 yards and seven touchdowns on 30 carries. For Wallington, Ryan Adzima completed 34 of 48 passes for 392 yards.

Arroyo (El Monte, Calif.) 56
Baldwin Park (Calif.) 53
The two teams combined for 1,243 yards with Nathan Coto of Arroyo completing 15 of 27 passes for 324 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 136 yards and a score. For Baldwin Park, Michael Moran completed 21 of 30 passes for 340 yards and five touchdowns with Raymen Barraza catching 11 passes for 183 yards and two touchdowns.

Lovejoy (Lucas, Texas) 55
Hallsville (Texas) 51
Lovejoy scored 22 points in a row to come from behind and defeat Hallsville. Dakota Michaels threw for 150 yards and Justice Luce threw for 159 yards for Lovejoy. For Hallsville, Macailyn Wilder ran 30 times for 237 yards and two touchdowns and Kha'lil Sneed ran for 149 yards and four touchdowns.

Athens (The Plains, Ohio) 55
Tri-Valley (Dresden, Ohio) 52
Athens needed a Dakotah McFee 25-yard fumble return for a touchdown in regulation and a 20-yard touchdown run by Joey Burrow in overtime to get past Tri-Valley. Burrow completed 19 of 22 passes for 284 yards and four touchdowns and also ran for two scores.

Ringgold (Ga.) 55
North Hall (Gainesville, Ga.) 54
Ringgold won its first ever GHSA playoff game thanks to the play of Slade Dale, who ran 14 yards for the game-tying touchdown with 1:43 remaining. Dale finished with 164 yards rushing with four touchdowns and also had 220 yards passing with two scores. Zac Little led North Hall with 275 yards rushing on 32 carries.

Southeast Guilford (Greensboro, N.C.) 56
Mount Tabor (Winston-Salem, N.C.) 54
Shakir Turner scored on a 1-yard run and C.J. McThay got the conversion run with 20 seconds left to give Southeast Guilford the win. Mount Tabor quarterback Raekwon Brown completed 18 of 25 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns, but Southeast Guilford countered with McThay, who ran 30 times for 261 yards and three touchdowns.



Wellesley (Mass.) 61
Marshfield (Mass.) 52
John Fadule completed 23 of 31 passes for 444 yards and six touchdowns and also ran for 76 yards and two scores to lead Wellesley. Jack Dolan caught six of those passes for 172 yards and three touchdowns.
