Softball Game Preview: Canarsie Wolfpack vs. Sunset Park HEAT

After both having extra time off, the Canarsie Wolfpack and the Sunset Park HEAT will shake off the rust and duke it out at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.

Canarsie is headed out in good spirits considering the team just ended their winless streak on the road against Erasmus Hall last Thursday. The Wolfpack walked away with a 15-11 victory over the Dutchmen. The Wolfpack's hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

Meanwhile, Sunset Park entered their tilt with Grady last Thursday with four consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with five. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 20-19 W against the Falcons. While the HEAT didn't have the best season last year (they finished 5-7), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Melanea Francisco and Selena Espinal did most of the damage at the plate: Francisco got on base in all four of her plate appearances with four runs, two stolen bases, and three RBI, while Espinal got on base in three of her five plate appearances with three stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. Francisco also hit a triple, marking her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Analia Perez, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.

Sunset Park was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .455. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .387 or higher every time they've taken the field this season.

Canarsie's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-3. As for Sunset Park, their victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 6-1.

Canarsie suffered a grim 20-4 defeat to Sunset Park in their previous meeting back in May of 2015. Can the Wolfpack avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
