Baseball Game Preview: Gilroy Mustangs vs. Christopher Cougars

Gilroy is 1-9 against Christopher since May of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Saturday. The Mustangs will take on the Cougars at 11:00 a.m. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Having struggled with seven losses in a row, Gilroy turned things around against Del Mar on Thursday. They were the clear victors by a 13-4 margin over the Dons. The Mustangs' offense finally found a way to get into gear: the high-octane performance was a 180-degree turn from their last four games.

Abram Valdez and Brennan Neander did most of the damage at the plate: Valdez went a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs, two stolen bases, and one RBI, while Neander went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. That's the most RBI Neander has posted since back in March. Jared Nelson was another key player, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.

Meanwhile, while Christopher put up some runs on Friday, the same can't be said for Westmont. The Cougars came out on top against the Warriors by a score of 5-0. That's two games straight that the Cougars have won by exactly five runs.

The team relied heavily on Sam Guenther, who went 1-for-2 with three stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.

Christopher hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They are a perfect 8-0 when they post two or more strikeouts.

The win made it two in a row for Christopher and bumps their season record up to 11-7. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 1 runs in those games. As for Gilroy, their win bumped their record up to 7-13.

Gilroy might still be hurting after the 18-2 defeat they got from Christopher in their previous meeting on April 8th. Can the Mustangs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
