Baseball Recap: John Bapst Memorial Takes a Loss

John Bapst Memorial blew Waterville out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Tuesday Waterville got their revenge. The Crusaders fell just short of the Panthers by a score of 6-4. The Crusaders were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Panthers earlier this season, when they won 12-2.

Aiden Ouellette put in work while hitting and pitching. He struck out ten batters over six innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off eight hits (and only one walk). He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in two of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs.

In other batting news, Abe Pendergast made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one double. Another player making a difference was Sam Churchard, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with three stolen bases.

This is the second loss in a row for John Bapst Memorial and nudges their season record down to 3-9. Even worse, they were so close both times: the defeats came by an average of only 1.5 runs. As for Waterville, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 5-6.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. John Bapst Memorial will head out to square off against Belfast at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Lions' pitching crew has only allowed 4.1 runs per game this season, so the Crusaders' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Waterville, they will head out on the road to take on Maine Central Institute at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
