Washington's state basketball champions crowned

All 12 state basketball titles were crowned over the weekend in Washington. Here's who won what:

Class 4A: Spokane schools sweep up
Chris Sarbaugh was named state tournament MVP after leading Gonzaga Prep (Spokane) past Curtis (University Place) (23-6) in the state title game 61-41. Sarbaugh had 17 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Prep (23-3), which rode its defense all season, finished the game on a 10-0 run. Prep upset top-ranked Garfield in the semifinals 66-53. Garfield (24-4) took third. Gonzaga Prep used just six players in both its semifinal and finals win.

The Lewis & Clark (Spokane) girls (20-6) won their fourth state title in six years after beating Federal Way (26-3) in the title game 62-49. State tourney MVP Devyn Galland scored 24 points in the title game for the Tigers, who were unranked in the final state poll.

Class 3A: Split decision for Metro League
The last time the Holy Names Academy (Seattle) Cougars lost was in the girls state title game last year. The Seattle school capped an undefeated season (29-0) by beating Prairie (Brush Prairie) (27-1) in a title game featuring two undefeated teams, 57-48. Claire Conricode, a Pacific commit, hit six 3-pointers and scored 20 points in the title game as Holy Names won its first state title. Conricode, who had to sit out last year's title game loss to Cleveland because of injury was named tourney MVP. Prairie, from the Vancouver are,a was playing without star player Heather Corral, who was lost to a knee injury earlier in the postseason.



It gave the Metro League one state title. The Seattle-based league, arguably the top basketball league in the state, usually dominates the boys tournament, but for the second straight year a non-Metro school won. Top-ranked O'Dea, Seattle Prep and Chief Sealth all lost in the quarterfinals.

Lakes (Lakewood), a state power in football and basketball, beat Bellevue (Wash.) (24-6) in the title game 71-56. Lakes' Isaac Winston was named tourney MVP. It was the first hoops title for Lakes (25-3), which has lost in the semifinals of either basketball or football the last three years.

Class 2A: New teams top the podium
Clover Park (Lakewood) (27-3) entered the state tournament as the top-ranked team in the state, and they left no doubt they were the state's top team by beating two-time defending state champ Squalicum (Bellingham) (18-9) in the title game, 69-54. Tana Pritchard, a Washington State football signee, earned state tourney MVP with 13 points and nine rebounds in the title game.

Squalicum, which returned just one starter from the teams that won the last two titles, beat Clover Park in the first round of the state tournament. It was a big state run for the Storm, which was 3-6 in December and finished third in their own league.

Prosser (26-1) lost in the state title game last year as River Ridge (Lacey) won its third title in four years. The Mustangs' defense made sure they didn't lose again. Prosser held Burlington-Edison (22-5) scoreless for an 11-minute span in the second quarter of the title game and won the girls title, 50-33. Tamara Jones earned MVP honors despite scoring just four points in the title game. She has the 2A state career record with 282 points.
River Ridge (23-3) finished third.

Class 1A: Cascade Christian still collecting titles
Tournament MVP Cody Shackett scored 26 points as Cascade Christian (Puyallup) won its second straight Class 1A state title, beating Zillah (23-6) in the title game 71-59. Cascade Christian also won the state football title in December. The Cougars (25-2) lost only to Class 3A state champ Lakes and Class 2A state qualifier Fife.



MacKenzie Taylor had 13 points and 10 rebounds in the title game as Freeman (Rockford) (27-1) repeated as girls champ and beat Lynden Christian (24-4) for the title 49-32.

Class 2B: Northwest Christian wins No. 7
Kwinn Hanson scored 21 in the title game as Northwest Christian (Colbert) (25-2) won its seventh state title by beating Napavine (24-4) in the title game 41-32.

Reardan (25-3), with three talented sophomores, won its first title since 1988 by beating Toutle Lake (Toutle) (26-3) in the girls title game 55-42.

Class 1B: Sunnyside coach sets record
Dean Wagenaar became the first boys basketball coach in state history to win six state titles as Sunnyside Christian (25-2) beat Neah Bay (23-6) in the title game 55-50. It was the second straight title for the Knights and fourth in five years.

The girls title was also won by a familiar team. Colton (25-2) won its third straight title, beating Almira-Coulee-Hartline (24-3) for the championship 50-40.
