Softball Game Preview: Mesa Jackrabbits vs. Westwood Warriors

Mesa is 2-8 against Westwood since March of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Monday. The Jackrabbits are taking a road trip to square off against the Warriors at 6:00 p.m. Mesa has given up an average of 15.3 runs per game this season, but Monday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Mesa is headed into Monday's matchup looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their sixth straight game on Thursday. They fell 16-12 to Skyline. Even if the Jackrabbits couldn't come away with the victory, the high-scoring effort was a great turnaround for their hitters, which had struggled int the games prior.

Mailyn Ortiz Cabezas put in work no matter where she played. On the mound, she pitched 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off five hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing two bases while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances. She also put up an RBI, which was her first of the season.

In other batting news, Leah Alcala was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring three runs and stealing four bases while going 1-for-4. Ana Hernandez was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.

Meanwhile, Friday just wasn't the day for Westwood's offense. They came up short against Shadow Ridge on Friday, falling 10-0. The Warriors have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Mesa's record is now 1-8. As for Westwood, they now have a losing record of 8-9-1.

Mesa might still be hurting after the 18-6 loss they got from Westwood in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can the Jackrabbits avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
