4. Dan Marino, Central Catholic (Pittsburgh, Pa.)
Marino seemed to make a career of playing outstanding football, only to have someone else nudge him out for top honors. A Parade All-American at Central Catholic, Marino was rated a bit below John Elway coming out of high school. A standout early in his career at Pittsburgh, Marino finished fourth in the Heisman voting as a junior and ninth as a senior. A subpar senior season resulted in Marino dropping to the 27th pick in the first round of the NFL draft. Marino is also, perhaps, known as being one of the greatest NFL players to never have won a Super Bowl, however he did hold numerous NFL passing records when he retired in 1999 and he earned a spot in the NFL Hall of Fame.
