Basketball Recap: Compton Comes Up Short

Compton was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their seventh straight defeat. They were outmatched by the Cabrillo Jaguars and fell 93-50. The Tarbabes lost against the Jaguars in their previous head to head back in January, too, but the margin this time around was even wider than the 77-66 score last time.

Cabrillo's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Mason Johnson led the charge by dropping a double-double on 12 points and 13 boards. Johnson is crushing it when it comes to boards: he's pulled down at least 11 every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Aedan Gonzales, who went 6 of 10 from beyond the arc on his way to 18 points.

Compton's loss dropped their record down to 2-10. As for Cabrillo, their win was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 6-3.

Compton will get a bit of extra time to process the defeat as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Serra at 7:00 p.m. on January 2, 2025. Cabrillo and Costa Mesa will round out the year against one another at at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday. One thing working in Costa Mesa's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last five matchups.
