Softball Game Preview: Dowagiac Chieftains vs. Coloma Comets

Dowagiac is a perfect 4-0 against Coloma since May of 2024 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Chieftains will host the Comets at 4:30 p.m. Dowagiac knows how to get runs on the board -- the squad has finished with ten runs or more in their past seven matchups -- so hopefully Coloma likes a good challenge.

Dowagiac is probably headed into the contest with a chip on their shoulder considering Lakeshore just ended the team's five-game winning streak on Monday. They came up short against the Lancers, falling 21-11.

Bree Behnke made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. Claire Hess was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI and one double.

Meanwhile, Coloma had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 10 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Tuesday. They never let the Blackhawks get on the board and left with a 14-0 victory. Considering the Comets have won five games by more than nine runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Coloma's win bumped their record up to 7-3. As for Dowagiac, their loss dropped their record down to 18-5.

Everything went Dowagiac's way against Coloma in their previous matchup back in May of 2025, as Dowagiac made off with a 12-1 victory. Will the Chieftains repeat their success, or do the Comets have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
