Academic 1 league recap: 3/8/13

Lowell had a successful week, as it won six total games to lead the league. The Cardinals beat Balboa 12-0, O'Connell 31-1, Wallenberg 15-0, Lick-Wilmerding 11-1 and Archbishop Riordan 6-4.

This could be a critical week for Lowell, which holds a 1-game lead over Galileo for Academic 1's top spot in the standings.

The Lions' pitching was especially stingy this week, allowing three hits and five walks to lead the league in both categories.

The Cardinals stole 18 bases this week, adding to their league-leading 25 steals on the year.

There were three hitters that batted over .400 in the league this week. The group was paced by Jake Simons, who collected nine hits in 18 at bats for a .500 average.

Galileo's Kyle Nelson led the league in strikeouts this week with 14. He's first in the league with 20 total strikeouts.

Nelson struck out 14 in the Lions' 8-0 win over Marshall on February 27. Over six innings of work, he gave up zero hits and zero runs.

Jake Simons drove in four runners as Lowell defeated the Bulldogs 15-0 on Thursday. He went 3-for-4 and scored two runs.
