Football Recap: Newton Comes Up Short

Newton extended their losing streak to four on Friday, dropping them down to 1-4. They lost 57-34 to the Richland County Tigers. Even if the Eagles couldn't come away with the win, the high-scoring effort was a great turnaround for their offense, which had struggled int the games prior.

As for Richland County, the victory keeps them at an undefeated 5-0. Fans of they have seen this all before: every one of the games they've played this season has ended in a blowout of 20+ points.

Richland County was led to victory by Gavyn Cothern and Xavier Owusu-Gyan. Cothern rushed for 181 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 10.1 yards per carry, while Owusu-Gyan rushed for 192 yards and three scores on only 15 carries. Those 192 rushing yards gave Owusu-Gyan a new career-high. Reed Klingler was another key player, picking up 104 receiving yards and one TD.

We've got plenty of inter-conference action coming up soon. Newton will face off against rival Paris at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Richland County is set to square off against their familiar foe Mt. Carmel at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams might be coming in a bit winded given these two teams combined for 1,070 yards in their previous games.
