Basketball Game Preview: Saint James Saints vs. Maret Frogs

Saint James hasn't had much luck against Maret recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Saint James Saints will look to defend their home court against the Maret Frogs at 5:30 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, both will really light up the scoreboard.

Saint James is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another highly-ranked state team: Flint Hill, who was ranked seventh in their home state at the time (Saint James was ranked 18th). Saint James fell just short of Flint Hill by a score of 71-68 back in December of 2024. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game back in December of 2024 (64), the Saints still had to take the loss.

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Jayden Yates, who went 8 for 10 from beyond the arc on his way to 31 points in addition to seven rebounds and six assists. His evening made it 11 games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Christian Gladchuk, who went 8 for 18 on his way to 22 points and seven rebounds.

Yates wasn't the only one working in the assists department: Saint James was working as a unit and finished the game with 18 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Maret). They blew past Phelps Architecture, Construction & Engineering, posting a 77-23 victory. The Frogs have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won four matchups by 23 points or more this season.

Maret's win was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 6-5. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 66.6 points per game. As for Saint James, their loss dropped their record down to 4-7.

Things could have been worse for Saint James, but things could have been a whole lot better as they took an 80-65 loss to Maret when the teams last played back in February of 2024.
