Preview: Cook Hornets vs. Irwin County Indians

The Cook Hornets will be playing at home against the Irwin County Indians at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Cook focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 19 on Saturday.

Cook had to endure a three-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They escaped with a win against Sumter County by the margin of a single free throw, 49-48.

Cook had a senior duo take command as Keshun McKever scored ten points and Ny'shaun Wallace scored ten points.

Meanwhile, Irwin County ended up a good deal behind Lanier County on Tuesday and lost 58-40. While losing is never fun, Irwin County can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 509th, while Lanier County is ranked 239th).

Despite their loss, Irwin County saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Jaylen Martin, who scored 13 points along with six rebounds and three steals, was perhaps the best of all. Martin has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last seven times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Javion Woodard, who scored eight points along with six rebounds and three steals.

Cook's victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 7-10. As for Irwin County, they have been struggling recently, as they've lost 11 of their last 12 matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-14 record this season.

Cook was able to grind out a solid victory over Irwin County in their previous meeting back in December of 2023, winning 47-36. Does Cook have another victory up their sleeve, or will Irwin County turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
