League recap: Lake Wales tops Merritt Island to extend winning streak

Lake Wales extended the longest winning streak in 5A District 10 this week by beating Merritt Island, 34-23. The win marks sixth in a row for the the Highlanders.

Lake Wales moved up to 86 from 129 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. Rod Shafer's team climbed the ranks as a result of topping the Mustangs 34-23.

The Highlanders' offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Railond Garrett threw for 89 and 1 touchdown and Darion Staten had 72 yards receiving. On the ground Justin Henderson contributed 166 yards. Davi'on Riley helped Lake Wales' passing attack out by catching 1 ball for 17 yards.

Lake Wales' dynamic duo of Garrett and Staten proved tough for Merritt Island to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Riley helped Lake Wales' passing attack out by catching 1 ball for 17 yards.

Henderson provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Highlanders beat Jeff Mclean's team. Henderson's key target this week was Staten, who caught 4 passes for 72 yards.

Poinciana's Jonathan Lindstrom and Joshua Lopez have formed a dream team this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. 6-4 quarterback Lindstrom has thrown for 2,143 yards this season, while Lopez has 34 catches for 805 yards. Lake Wales' Henderson leads the league in rushing yards with 1,537.

The Highlanders led 5A District 10 in scoring this week after putting up 34 points on the Mustangs. Henderson ran for 166 yards during the win.
