Baseball Recap: Cathedral Wins Going Away Against Santa Teresa

Cathedral gave up the first runs on Monday, but they didn't let that get them down. They put the hurt on the Santa Teresa Desert Warriors with a sharp 15-2 victory. The Fighting Irish have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Desert Warriors, too.

Cathedral got a great performance from Raul Diaz as he struck out six batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. That's the fewest hits Diaz has allowed since back in February.

At the plate, Cathedral let Gabriel Ramirez and Julian Escalante run wild. Ramirez got on base in four of his five plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and three RBI, while Escalante went 3-for-5 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. Those three runs gave Ramirez a new career-high. Alex Medrano also deserves some recognition as he launched his first home run of the season.

Cathedral always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .523. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Santa Teresa only posted an OBP of .321.

Cathedral has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-7-1 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.8 runs over those games. Santa Teresa's defeat ended a nine-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 11-3.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Cathedral will face off against Chaparral at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Chaparral will roll in looking for their eighth straight victory, something Cathedral surely won't give up without a fight. As for Santa Teresa, they will have a little extra prep time after the loss as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Da Vinci at 6:00 p.m. on the 11th. Santa Teresa is facing Da Vinci at the right time seeing as Da Vinci is stuck on a three-game losing streak.
