Basketball Recap: Cotopaxi Takes a Loss

Cotopaxi suffered their biggest defeat since March 1, 2024 on Saturday. They lost 56-34 to the Sierra Grande Panthers. The Pirates haven't had much luck with the Panthers recently, as the team's come up short the last three times they've met.

Despite the loss, Cotopaxi saw an underclassman step up: freshman Kenny Teter posted six points in addition to 17 rebounds and four blocks. Teter is on a roll when it comes to blocks, as he's now posted two or more in the last eight games he's played. Dylan Bond also deserves some recognition as he posted his first block of the season.

Sierra Grande was led to victory by Aron Ojeda and Jadyn Martinez. Ojeda shot 4-for-6 from long range and almost dropped a double-double on 24 points and nine boards, while Martinez almost dropped a double-double on 16 points and nine rebounds. Those 24 points gave Ojeda a new career-high. Kobe Mizokami was another key player, putting up 12 points.

Cotopaxi's defeat dropped their record down to 6-3. As for Sierra Grande, the victory was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 9-2.

Cotopaxi has already played their next matchup, a 54-40 win against Miami-Yoder on the 28th. As for Sierra Grande, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 70-59 victory against Kim/Branson on the 28th.
