Basketball Recap: Eastern Mennonite Takes a Loss

Eastern Mennonite had lost three straight on the road, but on Tuesday they dropped down to 6-9 to make it four. They were outmatched by the New Covenant Gryphons and fell 86-28. The Flames lost against the Gryphons in their previous head to head back in January of 2025, too, but the margin this time around was even wider than the 52-42 score last time.

As for New Covenant, they moved to 12-10 with that win, which also ended their six-game losing streak. They have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won nine matchups by 26 points or more this season.

New Covenant's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Rusty Hooks led the charge by dropping a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds. That's the most boards Hooks has posted since back in January of 2025. The team also got some help courtesy of Tristan Isenhour, who dropped a double-double with ten points and 15 assists.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Eastern Mennonite and North Cross will face off at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday without much rest, having both just played. The Flames will be up against the Raiders' rather soft defense (which has allowed 56.42 points per contest), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for New Covenant, they will be playing at home against Virginia Episcopal School at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Gryphons will need to watch out since the Bishops have now posted at least 55 points in their last 21 games.
