Basketball Recap: Spring Creek Spartans vs. Fernley Vaqueros

The Spring Creek Spartans lost against the Fernley Vaqueros back in January, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Saturday. Spring Creek took a serious blow against the Vaqueros, falling 66-26. Spring Creek has struggled against the Vaqueros recently, as their matchup on Saturday was their fourth consecutive lost matchup.

Spring Creek lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Delilah Bautista, who scored four points along with three steals. Bautista has been hot recently, having posted three or more steals the last three times she's played.

Fernley's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Kaiserita Otuafi, who scored 14 points along with seven rebounds. Another player making a difference was Jasmyne Torres, who scored 18 points.

Spring Creek has traveled a rocky road recently having lost nine of their last 12 matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-12 record this season. As for Fernley, their win was their 15th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 24-1.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Spring Creek and the Indians will face off at 6:00 p.m. on February 7th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are closely ranked in Nevada (Elko is ranked 40th, while the Spartans are ranked 56th). Fernley's road trip will continue as they head out to face the Greenwave at 6:00 p.m. on February 9th.
