The Union Colony Prep Timberwolves will square off against the Lyons Lions at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Union Colony Prep has three straight victories, Lyons has three straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the court.
Last Thursday, Union Colony Prep really took it to Bishop Machebeuf for the full four quarters, racking up a 53-24 win. The Timberwolves have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won eight games by 20 points or more this season.
Soliana Gebremeskel continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines, going 14-for-25 en route to 35 points and eight rebounds. That makes it nine consecutive games in which she has scored at least a third of Union Colony Prep's points. Another player making a difference was Jaelynn Valdez, who posted nine points and five assists.
Union Colony Prep was working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Bishop Machebeuf only posted four assists.
Meanwhile, Lyons played a tough contest on Thursday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They came up short against Gilpin County, falling 42-21. The match marked the Lions' lowest-scoring game so far this season.
Despite the loss, Lyons saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Ava Vasquez scored five points and 11 boards. Vasquez is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down ten or more in each of the last 12 games she's played.
Lyons' defeat dropped their record down to 11-6. As for Union Colony Prep, their victory bumped their record up to 9-7.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Union Colony Prep has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 22.5 boards per game. However, it's not like Lyons struggles in that department as they've been averaging 31.1 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Union Colony Prep came up short against Lyons in their previous matchup back in January of 2024, falling 38-28. Can Union Colony Prep avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
