Basketball Recap: Cesar E. Chavez Takes Loss Despite Strong Efforts from Grant Johnson and Johntta Thomas

Cesar E. Chavez fought the good fight in their overtime match against Spring Woods on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They took a 69-60 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Spring Woods Tigers.

Cesar E. Chavez's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Johntta Thomas, who went 8 for 14 on his way to 18 points and five rebounds, and Grant Johnson, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 12 boards. Johnson has been hot recently, having posted ten or more rebounds the last three times he's played. Jason Tran was another key player, putting up eight points.

Spring Woods' victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jaelin Bargas, who posted 12 points and five assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Torian Pickens, who went 6 of 12 on his way to 17 points along with six assists and three steals.

Cesar E. Chavez's defeat dropped their record down to 7-10. As for Spring Woods, they have been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season.

Cesar E. Chavez didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 52-50 win against Milby on the 4th. As for Spring Woods, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next matchup, a 67-50 victory against Waltrip on the 10th.
