Baseball Recap: Smethport Gets the Win

Smethport won against Oswayo Valley last Thursday with eight runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Wednesday. The Hubbers walked away with an 8-4 win over the Cameron County Raiders. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 10-9 back in April.

Colin Riekofsky and Zach Hungiville made a big impact no matter where they played. Throwing, Riekofsky struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off five hits. Meanwhile, Hungiville tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Riekofsky has become a key player for Smethport: the team is 7-1 when he allows at most three earned runs, but 1-4 otherwise. At bat, Riekofsky went 2-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double, while Hungiville got on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Cole Burdick, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base. He is becoming a predictor of Smethport's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 4-5 when he doesn't). Camryn Young was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base and two RBI.

The victory made it two in a row for Smethport and bumps their season record up to 8-5. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.0 runs over those games. As for Cameron County, their loss was their sixth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 3-11.

Smethport wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next contest, a 10-0 defeat against Kane on the 7th. As for Cameron County, they will welcome Northern Potter at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
