St. Anthony is a perfect 5-0 against Mattoon since April of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Bulldogs will welcome the Greenwave at 4:30 p.m. St. Anthony is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
St. Anthony's pitching crew heads into the match hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Monday. They came out on top against Mahomet-Seymour by a score of 5-0. The win made it back-to-back victories for St. Anthony.
Not much got past Brock Fearday, who gave up just three hits and racked up eight Ks to keep Mahomet-Seymour off the board. Fearday has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Vincent Vogel was excellent, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 1-for-2. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Brady Hatton, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double.
Meanwhile, Mattoon waltzed into their contest on Monday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 5-4 W against the Trojans.
Madden Johnson was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out nine batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off five hits. Johnson was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. He also hit a double, marking his first of the season.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kael Alexander, who went 1-for-3 with one triple and one run. That triple was his first of the season.
Mattoon pushed their record up to 8-3 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.8 runs over those games. As for St. Anthony, their victory bumped their record up to 6-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. St. Anthony has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Mattoon struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 7.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Everything went St. Anthony's way against Mattoon in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as St. Anthony made off with a 12-0 win. Do the Bulldogs have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Greenwave turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
