Baseball Game Preview: Central Woodstock Falcons vs. Riverheads Gladiators

Central Woodstock hasn't had much luck against Riverheads recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Falcons will head out on the road to square off against the Gladiators at 5:00 p.m. Central Woodstock will be looking to extend their current four-game winning streak.

While Central Woodstock didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-15), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They came out on top against Rappahannock County by a score of 5-1 on Tuesday. Surprisingly, this marked the fifth straight game that the away team has come away the victor.

Nathan Snyder spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on five hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Blake Helsley, who scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Austin Hosaflook, who scored two runs while going 1-for-3.

Riverheads never got on the board in their matchup last Tuesday, but that sure wasn't the case in their game against Waynesboro last Thursday. They were the clear victors by a 14-3 margin over the Little Giants. The result was nothing new for the Gladiators, who have now won three contests by 11 runs or more so far this season.

Riverheads pushed their record up to 5-1 with the win, which was their fifth straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.0 runs over those games. As for Central Woodstock, their win bumped their record up to 7-3.

Central Woodstock came up short against Riverheads when the teams last played back in March, falling 9-5. Can the Falcons avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
