Softball Game Preview: Conrad Cowboys vs. Columbus Cougars

Conrad and Columbus are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2016, but likely not for long. The Cowboys will be defending their home field for the first time this season when they go up against the Cougars at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Conrad will be strutting in after a win while Columbus will be coming in after a loss.

Conrad is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They came out on top against Non Varsity Opponent by a score of 8-3 back in March. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Cowboys as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.

Evagelene Denzer was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out 12 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits. Those 12 strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sierra Dockter, who scored two runs while going 4-for-4. What's more, she posted two doubles, the most she's had since back in April of 2024. Emily Thompson was another key player, scoring a run while going 3-for-4.

Conrad was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .486. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

Meanwhile, Columbus fell victim to Shepherd and their airtight pitching crew on Thursday. They came up short against the Mustangs, falling 10-0. Having soared to a lofty 12 runs in the game before, the Cougars' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.

Conrad's win bumped their record up to 2-4. As for Columbus, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-2.

Everything went Conrad's way against Columbus in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, as Conrad made off with a 14-4 victory. Will the Cowboys repeat their success, or do the Cougars have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
