Softball Recap: Parkland Comes Up Short

Parkland dropped their record down to 20-15 on Friday, which also ended the team's three-game streak of wins. They came up short against the Lubbock-Cooper Pirates, falling 7-1. Having soared to a lofty 13 runs in the game before, the Matadors couldn't push the score so high this time.

Samantha Martinez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and five unearned) runs on six hits and racked up 12 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 15 consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Stephanie Flores was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles and one run. She has been hot recently, having posted two or more doubles the last three times she's played.

As for Lubbock-Cooper, their victory was their 13th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 27-5. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.9 runs over those games.

On Lubbock-Cooper's side, they also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Brooklyn Ray gave up only one earned run on six hits and racked up nine Ks.

On the hitting side, Lubbock-Cooper's victory was truly a team effort as seven different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Lainey Gibson, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double.

While Parkland had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
