Baseball Game Preview: Murphysboro Red Devils vs. Carterville Lions

Murphysboro is 1-8-1 against Carterville since April of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Red Devils will look to defend their home field against the Lions at 4:30 p.m. Murphysboro has given up an average of 13 runs per game this season, but Tuesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Monday just wasn't the day for Murphysboro's offense. They lost 12-0 to Harrisburg on Monday. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Meanwhile, Carterville made easy work of Massac County on Monday and carried off a 16-1 victory. The result was nothing new for the Lions, who have now won ten games by six runs or more so far this season.

Alex Lyell was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching four innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI.

In other batting news, Carterville got a massive performance out of Keaton Basolo, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI and two runs. Those four RBI gave Basolo a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Haiden Lange, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI.

Carterville always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .633. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Carterville's win bumped their record up to 14-3. As for Murphysboro, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-12.

Murphysboro might still be hurting after the 9-1 loss they got from Carterville in their previous meeting back in April of 2025. Can the Red Devils avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
