Baseball Recap: Berkeley Takes a Loss

Berkeley was the 9-7 winner over Bishop O'Dowd when they last played one another last Tuesday, but their luck changed this time around. The Yellowjackets fell just short of the Dragons by a score of 5-4 on Thursday. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Berkeley got a good showing from Andrew Hudacko, who pitched two innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Hudacko has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than two hits any time he's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, Isaiah Mays stepped up to lead a balanced group of hitters: he scored a run and stole a base while going 3-for-4. He has become a key player for Berkeley: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least three hits, but 5-7 otherwise. Anthony Enrique Sotelo was another key player, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 1-for-3.

Berkeley now has a losing record of 7-8. As for Bishop O'Dowd, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-7 record this season.

Berkeley and Bishop O'Dowd could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. The Yellowjackets will challenge Castro Valley at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday with a big rank disadvantage (379 vs. 143). Meanwhile, Bishop O'Dowd (ranked 306th) will meet North Cobb Christian (ranked 75th) at 3:45 p.m. on Monday.
