Baseball Recap: Irvine Takes a Loss

Irvine was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They took a 12-7 hit to the loss column at the hands of the El Modena Vanguards. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Vanguards this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 3-2 back in March.

Noah Pham got Irvine off to a strong start despite the final result, pitching three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit. Pham has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one hit any time he's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, Jack Dressendorfer and Owen Song did some serious damage despite the final result: Dressendorfer went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Song went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base. Dressendorfer is becoming a predictor of Irvine's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 2-1 (and 5-9 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Smith Spivey, who went 1-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.

Irvine's loss dropped their record down to 7-10. As for El Modena, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 14-4.

Irvine wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next game, an 8-2 victory against Portola on the 8th. As for El Modena, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next matchup, a 7-1 win against Brea Olinda on the 8th.
