Baseball Game Preview: Logan County Cougars vs. Russell County Lakers

Logan County is on a three-game streak of home wins, while Russell County is on a three-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Cougars will host the Lakers at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Logan County proved they can win big on Thursday (they won by ten) and on Friday they proved they can win the close ones too. They skirted past Kirkwood 4-3.

Ty'Sean Thomeczek was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out six batters over 5.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. Thomeczek was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one double.

In other pitching news, Landon Gregory looked comfortable as he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

Thomeczek wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Hunter Holloway, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with two RBI. Those two RBI gave Holloway a new career-high.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Russell County). They were the clear victors by an 18-2 margin over Metcalfe County on Friday. The Lakers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight contests by six runs or more this season.

Logan County has been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 11 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-5 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.7 runs over those games. As for Russell County, their victory bumped their record up to 14-5.

Logan County beat Russell County 10-5 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Will the Cougars repeat their success, or do the Lakers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
