Baseball Recap: Smithtown Christian Takes Down Eldred in a Playoff Battle

Smithtown Christian had already proven themselves in the regular season and they didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. They blew past the Eldred Yellowjackets 12-0 on Sunday. Considering the Knights have won ten matches by more than five runs this season, Sunday's blowout was nothing new.

Quincy Gibbs and Vaughn Beresford made a big impact no matter where they played. On the mound, Gibbs tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Beresford didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out seven over four innings pitched. Gibbs has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than two hits in ten consecutive appearances. At bat, Gibbs went 3-for-4 with two runs and two doubles, while Beresford went a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. Those four hits gave Beresford a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Caleb Calder, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Erick Aristy, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple.

Smithtown Christian was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Eldred only posted a batting average of .067.

Smithtown Christian is on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 11 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-2 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Eldred, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-7 record this season.

Smithtown Christian will challenge North Warren Central at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The Cougars will roll in looking for their eighth straight victory, something the Knights surely won't give up without a fight. Eldred does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
