Basketball Recap: Brittney Chapman and Jayden Lara Secure Win for Gregory-Portland

A well-balanced attack led Gregory-Portland over King in every quarter on their way to victory on Tuesday. The Gregory-Portland Wildcats enjoyed a cozy 54-39 victory over the King Mustangs. Given the Wildcats' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 465th, while the Mustangs are ranked 970th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Leading Gregory-Portland to victory were Jayden Lara and Brittney Chapman. Lara posted 13 points along with seven rebounds and five assists, while Chapman dropped a double-double on 15 points and ten rebounds. What's more, Chapman also racked up two assists, the most she's had since back in December of 2024. Macie Besinaiz was another key player, putting up seven points along with six boards and four steals.

Gregory-Portland smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 22 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.

Charis Peninger and Kamila Hernandez certainly did their best on Tuesday to avoid the loss. Peninger went 7 of 16 on her way to 20 points in addition to six rebounds and three steals, while Hernandez had seven points along with six steals and five rebounds. That was a full 51.3% of King's points, marking the third time in a row she's put up more than a third of the team's points.

The win made it two in a row for Gregory-Portland and bumps their season record up to 18-11. As for King, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost seven of their last eight matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-20 record this season.

Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing Corpus Christi Moody the next time they take the court. Gregory-Portland will host Corpus Christi Moody at 6:15 p.m. on Friday, while King will head out to face them at 6:15 p.m. on January 14th.
