Volleyball Recap: Vela Comes Up Short

If Vela was riding high fresh off their 3-0 takedown of Sharyland on Saturday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Sabercats fell just short of the Rowe Warriors by a score of 3-2 on Tuesday. The Sabercats were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Warriors earlier this season, when they won 3-0.

Vela actually scored more points across those five sets (104-102), but sadly they still had to settle for second. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-20, 14-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-11.

Despite the loss, Vela still got an impressive performance from Fernanda Valdez, who had 30 digs and two aces. Valdez is on a roll when it comes to digs, as she's now had 13 or more in each of the last seven games she's played.

Vela has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 31-9 record this season. As for Rowe, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 21-13 record this season.

Vela and Rowe should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings. The Sabercats will take on Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Southwest at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday with a big rank advantage (146 vs. 1188). Meanwhile, Rowe (ranked 376th) will meet Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial (ranked 926th) at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
