Football Recap: Winona Christian Starts Season with Victory on the Road

Winona Christian had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They breezed past the Regents Lions to the tune of 45-18 on Friday. The Stars pushed the score to 33-12 by the end of the third, a deficit the Lions had little chance of recovering from.

Will Irwin had a dynamite game, rushing for 205 yards and four TDs while picking up 8.5 yards per carry.

Irwin was just one part of a punishing run game: Winona Christian was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 283 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in September of 2024.

On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Winona Christian's defense and their three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Brannon Jones, Austin Wiggins, and Holland Self, who each picked up one sack apiece. Irwin got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Coming up, Winona Christian will look to takes advantage of their home field for the first time this season as they takes on Indianola Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Regents, they are packing up and heading out on the road for their first away game of the season: they will take on Marshall Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
