Softball Recap: Navajo Prep Picks Up Seventh Consecutive Victory

Navajo Prep waltzed into their matchup on Tuesday with six straight wins... but they left with seven. They blew past the Thoreau Hawks 17-2. The Eagles might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won ten contests by six runs or more this season.

Shianne Begay was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kira Begay, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, four RBI, and two doubles. Another player making a difference was Amia Salazar, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.

Navajo Prep was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .545. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .321 or higher in 12 consecutive games.

Navajo Prep's win was their eighth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 16-5. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 23.5 runs over those games. As for Thoreau, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 8-15.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Navajo Prep is set to challenge their familiar foe Zuni at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, Thoreau will take on rival Wingate at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.
