Softball Game Preview: Girard Yellowjackets vs. Union City Bears

Girard is 0-7 against Union City since April of 2016 but things could change on Thursday. Girard will head out on the road to take on Union City at 4:30 p.m. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

While Girard's victory against Oil City wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. Girard had just enough and edged out Oil City 9-8 on Tuesday.

Cate Bennett spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and five unearned) runs on ten hits and racked up 12 Ks. Those 12 strikeouts gave her a new career-high.

At the plate, Girard got a massive performance out of Laurel Brink, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was Madison Chaffee, who scored two runs while going 3-for-4.

Meanwhile, Union City got themselves on the board against North East on Thursday, but North East never followed suit. They blew past the Grape Pickers 18-0. The Bears haven't had any issues with the Grape Pickers recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.

The victory got Girard back to even at 1-1. As for Union City, the win also got them back to even at 1-1.

Girard might still be hurting after the 13-2 defeat they got from Union City in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Can Girard avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
