Baseball Recap: West Marion Takes a Loss

West Marion fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Poplarville on Saturday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell 6-2 to the Hornets. The Trojans were not able to make up for their loss to the Hornets from their previous meeting back in February of 2025.

Sam Smith was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over 4.1 innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because West Marion is 2-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 2-4 otherwise.

On the hitting side, Kolby Stringer was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one run and one double.

West Marion now has a losing record of 4-5. As for Poplarville, their record is now 6-3.

Looking ahead, West Marion will take on Columbia Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Trojans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Cougars have averaged an impressive 7.8 runs per game this season. As for Poplarville, they will challenge Picayune at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Maroon Tide's pitching crew has only allowed 3.1 runs per game this season, so the Hornets' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
