Softball Preview: Newman Central Catholic Comets vs. Mendota Trojans        
        
		
            
 The Newman Central Catholic Comets will head out on the road to  face off against  the Mendota Trojans at 4:30  p.m.  on Monday. Given that  the pair suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this  matchup.
 Last Friday, it was a hard-fought  contest, but Newman Central Catholic had to settle for  a  5-4 defeat against Sherrard. The  loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Newman Central Catholic in their matchups with Sherrard: they've now lost five in a row.
  Jessalin Johns put in work no matter where she played. She  tossed seven innings while giving up just one earned  (and four unearned) runs off   six  hits. Johns has been consistent recently: she hasn't  tossed less than five  strikeouts in five consecutive pitching appearances. Johns was also big at the plate,  scoring a  run while going 2-for-4.
 In other batting news,  Madison Duhon made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and  went 2-for-3 with a  home run. Another player making a difference was  Brenleigh Cook, who  scored a  run while going 1-for-4.
 Meanwhile, Mendota was not able to break out of their rough patch  on Thursday as the team picked up their third straight  defeat. They suffered a  tough 21-5 loss at the hands of Princeton.
 Newman Central Catholic's record is now 4-7. As for Mendota, their record is now 2-7.
 Newman Central Catholic took their  win against Mendota  in their previous matchup  back in April of 2023 by a conclusive  14-3. Will Newman Central Catholic repeat their success,  or does  Mendota have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
