Football Recap: Cheyenne Mountain Starts off Right with Win over Widefield

Cheyenne Mountain had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They walked away with a 28-15 win over the Widefield Gladiators on Saturday. The Red-Tailed Hawks have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Gladiators, too.

Among those leading the charge was Sam Hawker, who rushed for 117 yards and one score on only 15 carries, and also threw for 26 yards and one touchdown. Those 117 rushing yards gave him a new career-high.

Cheyenne Mountain didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Widefield to a completion percentage of just 43.8%. The team can thank Christian Barnard for the heroic effort on defense: he. Cheyenne Mountain hasn't an opponent to post a completion percentage of 0.25 or higher in four consecutive matches dating back to last season.

Cheyenne Mountain didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Hawker and Josh Lucas. Cole Rueschhoff was another major factor on D, picking up a sack and making 11 total tackles.

Although Widefield took the loss, they still got scores from Braeden Mitton and Lonnie Dorsey.

Coming up, Cheyenne Mountain will head out on the road to square off against Pueblo Centennial at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Widefield, they will look to defend their home field on Friday against Liberty at 7:00 p.m.
